What is OpenClaw, the AI agent Microsoft is willing to mimic
Microsoft is developing new AI agents for Microsoft 365 Copilot, inspired by OpenClaw, an open-source tool that runs AI tasks locally on a user's device rather than in the cloud. While OpenClaw appeals to developers for its flexibility and on-device control (and often pairs with Claude for performance), it has drawn criticism over security risks.
How will the new one be different?
Microsoft's version aims to address those concerns by prioritizing enterprise-grade security, governance, and integration with its existing ecosystem. The company already has related tools in the works, including Copilot Cowork (introduced in March), which performs actions inside Microsoft 365 apps using an internal personalization system called "Work IQ." Microsoft has also partnered with Anthropic to bring Claude into these experiences, though current tools remain cloud-based.
Analyst Takeaways
It's not yet clear whether the new agent will run locally like OpenClaw or stay cloud-based with borrowed features. The broader goal is an always-on assistant capable of handling complex, multi-step workflows. More details are expected at Microsoft Build in June.
