Microsoft Goes All-In on Agentic AI
At its Microsoft Ignite conference, Microsoft announced a major expansion into agentic AI with the launch of Microsoft Agent 365, a new "control plane" platform for managing AI agents across enterprises. It is available now through the Microsoft 365 admin center and Frontier early-access program.
Key components of Agent 365
A complete registry of all agents in an organization, including unregistered shadow agents. Integration with Microsoft Defender for security, Entra for identity, and Purview for governance. Agentic capabilities embedded in Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Office apps. A visualization tool for monitoring agent behavior and connections. Connection to Work IQ, an expanded intelligence layer that learns user habits, relationships, and work patterns to power Copilot.
New agents and features:
- Team Admin Agent for automating IT tasks in Teams
- Agent Mode in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- A new Copilot Chat (preview by March 2026) for users without a Copilot license
- Teams agents can now interact with GitHub, Asana, and Atlassian via Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP)
- Partnerships with ServiceNow and MongoDB to extend agent interoperability
Analyst Takeaways
Microsoft's edge comes from owning the identity layer, allowing it to treat agents like digital employees with assigned identities, something competitors cannot easily replicate. Combined with Microsoft Graph's data access, this gives Microsoft a uniquely integrated agent ecosystem. Constellation Research's Ray Wang says agents could automate 70 to 80 percent of the work of entire departments, shifting competition toward what he calls decision velocity.
Challenges
The agentic AI market is crowded, with competitors including Google Vertex AI, Oracle, Nvidia, OpenAI, and Moveworks. Cross-platform agent orchestration remains unsolved. Microsoft's dominant position also raises potential antitrust concerns.
Bottom Line
Microsoft is positioning itself to govern AI agents the same way enterprises govern human employees, betting that its identity and data infrastructure make it the only platform that can do so at scale.
